‘Artefacts of Excavation’ – Creating museum distribution lists for Egyptian artefacts

Packing of Egyptian antiquities

British excavations of Egyptian sites resulted in countless ancient objects leaving Egypt. But where did these objects then go?

‘Artefacts of Excavation’ is a 3-year, AHRC funded project led by Dr. Alice Stevenson, the curator of the Petrie Museum of Egyptian Archaeology, and Professor John Baines of Oxford that aims to track the international distribution of finds from British excavations in Egypt. The aim of this project is to create an online database to relocate and recontextualise and these artefacts. This project will help countless Egyptologists and scholars interested in the objects excavated from various sites and how the objects arrived at a multitude of museums.
